Increase Log Quality Through Improved BuckingThe Hardwood Value Improvement Project (HVIP) is a training program that integrates field, classroom and computer simulation techniques to teach better bucking decision making. The goal of HVIP is to increase the value and quality of hardwood logs in the eastern hardwood region by improving the log bucking skills of loggers and yard workers. The training will be delivered to the logging industry through a network of local trainers.The HVIP training program and computer optimizing simulator was developed by Dr. Jim Pickens at Michigan Technological University with funding from U.S. Forest Service's Wood Education Resource Center. The HVIP program is supported by many groups, public and private. Currently HVIP is recruiting Local Trainers throughout 29 state eastern hardwood region.
