Bucker Training

Click on your region to see Local Trainers.

This project is focused on enabling loggers to improve their log bucking skills. The expected result of this training will be significantly improved average log values. The general approach to achieve project goals is a train-the-trainer process which involves transferring training tools and materials, training session format and strategies, and regional customization of the training to fit the needs of Local Trainers. The specific approach employed to train the Local Trainers relies on Regional Coordinators, who would train the Local Trainers.

Local Trainer Training

Local Trainer Candidate Selection
(Draft Guidelines 4/7/06)

1. Good knowledge of and experience with logs.

2. Above average computer skills. (And access to computers for training)

3. Good people/educational skills.

4. Recognized as a good instructor (quite similar to # 3).

5. Resources to offer multiple training classes. (Do they have a connection with a state/local sponsoring entity?) They will need to acquire the same "tool kit" you use and the HVIP project does not have funds to provide that equipment.

6. Willing to monitor and report results of training from feedback by individuals or companies completing the training at the local level.

7. Availability. Each LT candidate must to willing to attend a training session of approximately 3 days length at a site somewhere in their region or an adjacent region.

They must also be willing to conduct several "bucker" training sessions per year in conjunction with a local sponsor or existing logger education program in their state. Local training sessions for buckers will probably be 1-2 days in length depending on what length is acceptable to the buckers, their employers and the sponsoring organization. To date there is no firm requirement or guideline for the bucker training, but 1 day may not be sufficient based on prior experience teaching the program.

8. Local Trainers must be Certified by HVIP Regional Coordinators after having completed the prescribed HVIP training and must agree to provide a minimum of three local workshops within two years of completion of training.

Sponsor Requirements

State/Local Sponsor Requirements
(Draft Guidelines 4/7/2006)

1. Must utilize only Certified HVIP Trainers for "bucker" training involving the HW Buck software.

2. Local publicity and registration administration. HVIP logo should be utilized along with that of the sponsoring organization for program recognition. There are no charges or fees for use of the HVIP logo, training materials, HW Buck software CD, Certificates or training format. Local sponsors may charge registration fees for bucker training to cover the cost of the instructor, equipment, training materials and program overhead. HVIP program guidelines urge local sponsors to keep the cost of the training as low as possible to encourage maximum participation.

3. Arrangements for training site and suitable training facility, 4-5 "stringers", laptop computers or access to computers, data projector, projection screen, etc. are the responsibility of local sponsors or organizations offering the training.

4. Necessary equipment and instructional materials for instructor to conduct the class. (Tool kit) Each HVIP certified trainer will need a "Tool Kit" of equipment and supplies to conduct bucker training classes. This equipment is not provided by the program, thus its expense will need to be underwritten by the sponsoring organization. A list of required equipment can be provided by HVIP regional coordinators.

5. Reports to RC's containing class rosters w/ complete trainee contact information (for issuing certificates & distributing HVIP program CD's), results of pre and post training bucking exercise, trainee assessment of the workshop content/instructor, and copy of training agenda must be reported in a timely fashion to HVIP Regional Coordinators.

6. Safety equipment necessary, but not required to be furnished by individual trainees. Exact requirements to be defined by local sponsoring organization

7. No actual log bucking is recommended during the training for safety considerations. Computer simulations will be a realistic substitute.

8. The HVIP program suggests that bucker training sessions be limited to a maximum of 20 participants to maintain individual attention by the instructor to each trainee.

9. The HVIP program does not grant "franchises" to local sponsors for exclusive rights to offer the training. There may be more than one organizations within a state offering HVIP bucker training.
